When you are viewing video content in landscape, you can remove the video over the notch.

What happens?

To preserve the aspect ratio of the phone, you get black bars on the top and bottom of the video.

This is the hubris of Apple when debating whether or not to program the notch into the panel. They are OK with you having black bars on top and bottom of the screen when watching video content-- OLED or not.

you're not really getting a 5.8" screen.....

But then you would need a larger phone to add in the bezels to remove the notch. I would rather have the smaller form factor with the notch until they can put the camera and sensors behind the screen.

I agree, I really don't understand why people are up in arms about this. Just tap the screen and watch it without the notch, done, nothing to talk about.
