Would appreciate some thoughts on the below.

Sold my cMBP 13", and upgraded to a 15".
Wanted to see if I could continue using my TM external, with the data from the 13", thinking that if I maybe missed something that I needed off the 13", I could still dig in to the original TM backups (until they were eventually overwritten).

The external is a 2TB, and I was using TM in encrypted mode.

On 'unlocking' the external and having TM start up on the new 15", was told there was not enough space on the external.
Instead of formatting/erasing the entire drive, I navigated to the TM backup folders inside Finder, and selected a bunch from the middle, leaving 1/2 early TM folders, and a couple of the last/latests TM backups off my old 13". I then 'trashed' them.

I then tried to empty the trash, and Finder did its thing of trying to calculate how many files needed to be deleted.

Thing is, it was over 2.8 millions files, and more worryingly, the process was/is constantly being interrupted with Finder flashing up dialogues telling me:

"The operation can't be completed because the item "folders"/"spindump"/"_CodeSignature" etc. is in use"...

I am met with the options to "Skip", "Stop" or Continue".

To make things worse, I couldn't complete the process, since I failed to foresee it would take as long as it has, and require my constant input, so had to interrupt it with my packing the MBP away in the safe, since we were leaving for a long-weekend.

Starting up again, and all was fine. Opened trash, and there were only a handful of old items to be deleted, unrelated to the TM attempt, which was done without fuss.
However, as soon as I opened the external TM drive again, and input the password, Finder then "found" the items I tried to trash, and went back to attempting the delete, with dialogues as above returning.

Edit:

After hitting Stop and then "Relaunching" Finder through Force Quit Apps, the process appears to have been interrupted. I can now open Finder and 'see' the various TM subfolders that Finder is trying to delete, but as mentioned - there are PLENTY of files it will need to work through.

What are my best options now?

Questions:
1.) Do I wait it out? It could take very long, and will require my selecting "Skip/Stop/Continue" each time.
Are the dialogues about "spindump" and "_CodeSignature" etc. cause for concern?
What would be best - "Skip" or "Continue"?

2.) Bite the bullet and erase the drive completely using Disk Utility.
Will that quash Finder's attempts at the background delete?

Any ideas?

Suggestion:
Try either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper for your backups.
Things will go MUCH easier... ;)

Thanks, I have CCC and run it on externals at the office. This is for the "home" TM backup.

I don't mind losing the contents of the TM drive, but am trying to understand whether nuking the drive now, is going to cause problems with Finder not having completed its attempt at delete...
