I’ve never bought AppleCare before but have non-critically damaged phones before. I think I’m going to get it for my 17 Pro but just want to ensure it really is everything protected in every situation? In Canada if it matters at all.

I do see the $39 service fee for glass, $129 for other damage. Is there any hidden fine print or gotchas in the coverage? I spend a lot of time outdoors, and the phone regularly comes in and out of pocket in rugged terrain.

Some things I wonder about:
- if my phone falls over a ledge or into deep water and cannot be (easily?) physically recovered, can I get a replacement?
- if it tumbles down and is basically obliterated, still covered?
- what if one of the camera sensors/lenses gets a scratch or dust spot? I had dust inside my 30 pro which showed up on telephoto

Basically is AppleCare truly going to have my back for the 2 years, or will I be frustrated when or if something actually happens?

Apple deals with issues as an ADH (Accidental Damage and Handling). That covers any damage from accidents. It's a set fee based on whatever needs to be repaired, or a replacement fee if that is warranted.

You will NOT get coverage for anything Apple determines is 'cosmetic'. Cosmetic, as defined by Apple is anything that does not impair the normal operation of the device and its components. Micro scratch on your screen? They won't replace the screen. Small nick in the frame? No fix. Obliterate your phone or smash the glass (front or back) - yes.

Not sure if Canada has it or not, but there is also theft and loss replacement in the USA. I think that's extra, but IDK. May be standard by now.

I saw the loss/theft bit after posting… it appears it’s not even an option in Canada? Slightly annoying!

In the example of my camera/lens - if there’s dust or scratch there the objectively alters the photo like a visible dust spot, would that be covered or is that still considered cosmetic? Are they stingy with their coverage or options, or err on the side of treating you well as it APPEARS they do when you’re purchasing and such

If there is dust in the lens, I have to assume that's a manufacturing issue. In which case, AC wouldn't even be involved. That's a warranty issue.

If a scratch on a lens affects picture taking/quality then I suppose you could argue that it's damage. But if it does not affect that then they would probably say it's cosmetic.

All of this is an opinion. I've never had either of those issues.

As to where they might draw the line, I think it really comes down to the genius. All of my issues have been cut and dry with no ambiguity in damage or warranty issue. But, if there are any good geniuses left they will err on the side of the customer. If you're being a dick when dealing with them though, they probably won't be inclined to see it your way.

I would just advise that you don't treat AC as a substitute for a case. Meaning, dropping in to the Apple store for every little thing and asking for a repair/replacement. I'm not saying you would, I don't know you, but that sort of thing is exactly why they have a cosmetic damage disclaimer.
