Hi.
At present I have 2006 Mac pro quad 3ghz with 6gb ram, 1tb hd and a 2008 Macbook white 2ghz, 2gb ram, 320gb hd.
I use the Macbook like a laptop, sitting round the house and taking out with me. The desktop is used for music production and also running windows to run turbolister for ebay which is my job and I tend to run office in Windows also.
Now my issue is a combination of space and the fact there are only 24 hours in the day.
I have been considering selling the 2 and purchasing a new(poss refurb or used) macbook pro I5, im happy enough with a 13" as thats what the macbook is and I will be keeping the monitor, keyboard and mouse incase I want the screeen.
I know the money is gonna be give or take a couple of hundred pounds the same so thats not an issue but I want to know how say the 2.3gz i5 will match up to the mac pro performance wise?. I know there are 5 years technology in there but that Mac pro was the best money could buy and I never have any issues of any type even when running cubase with masses of vsts and various other software open.

Anyone offer any views on this?, am I gonna get similar performance from the mbp as the pro?

:)

I guess I'm wondering, why would you want to switch up what you have right now? Are you wanting to do more work on the road? But I'm sure...; I would suggest searching for benchmarks for the MBP 2011 and your Mac Pro.

Those will give you an estimate of how powerful the respective machine is... but I mean... if you're just going to use the MBP out in the field/around the house then just plug it up to a desk, why not keep what you have? That is, if you're content with the performance you have now.

Its space and general convenience and yeah I forgot to say that I have a storage unit so take the laptop out with me a lot. I probably use the macbook far more than the pro maybe 80/20 so it seems pointless having an amazing machine sitting and not being used much while the bog standard laptop is used all the time, I just figured it makes more sense.
The Mac pro is mostly exclusively for music which is only a hobby so I dont get to spend as much time on it as I like. The other thing is it would be nice to be able to make music on the move, the macbook will run it but is not nearly powerfull enough to get past a couple of channels.
I guess the other option would be to sell the macbook and buy a macbook pro and keep the mac pro as well but not sure my finances could push to that and its a bit greedy.
But yeah I will see if I can find some benchmarks. :)

Yea; selling both and getting a more powerful laptop to use anywhere would be a better choice for you then. Find the benchmarks and... I guess you could look at a baseline 15 inch. It's a quad core machine and has discrete graphics so i'ts going to be better than the 13 inch in all regards. Of course, you're paying for that performance and it's 15 inches.
