Hey there.

I have a G4 864 tower with 1 Gig of ram.

I use it mostly in my home recording studio - but lately - it's been having a bit of a tough time keeping up...

I've noticed that there are places out there that you can purchase faster processor such as this place:

These Dudes

Has anyone had any experience with upgrading this way - or should I just get a new tower...

Thanks,

SparkyCanada

I'd get a Mac mini long before I'd get a CPU upgrade. Are their any Classic or PowerPC specific applications you need to run? Do you have any expansion cards you REALLY need?

I wouldn't spend more then $100 in upgrades for the Power Mac G4.

"Recording studio" --- it's a cinch that the OP has more than one 3.5" hard drive in the machine (and if they don't they should, to put the OS and the audio data on separate spindles), the Mini just isn't going to sub for that.

OP, I would be looking for a used G5 tower machine, rather than hotrodding the G4 867. With a CPU upgrade on teh G4, you're still saddled with a slow bus and memory, and a limit of 120 Gb per hard drive.

I always record to an external drive... :)

ps - what's "OP" stand for?

I was thinking of the same thing when reading this. You'll gain more in processor speed with a Mini than you will with a G4 upgrade card.

Or if anything look to buy a used Mac Pro or G5 Tower.
