I was following a thread on another forum discussing the increased "black space" between the screen and the bezel to the side of the screen with the new iPhone.
I believe the consensus is that the reason for that is that the new bezel is thinner. While I prefer a more wall-to-wall feeling as others have expressed, there is actually a benefit to this new approach that I don't think I have heard anyone explain.
A friend of mine has a very nice Vaja case for his iPhone. The leather wraps nicely around the bezel. His biggest complaint about using his iPhone/Vaja combo is that it is difficult to tap the buttons or icons to the very side of the screen because his not so thin fingers hit the leather case.
With this new thinner bezel design, it should be easier to design a case that covers the bezel, without impinging upon the ability to tap at any point on the screen.
