I currently have a Macbook Air, iPad and new iPhone 5 and am having a tough time with my contacts.

In the past, I have used g-mail which I like, but there are many contacts in there that are outdated and no longer useful to me.

What is the best way (and order of steps) to thin out the very long list? I thought I did it once, but they all sycnhed back together again.

In contacts, I have ALL CONTACTS iCLoud Contacts and Facebook.

I have moved some to favorites, VIP and starred, but I really would like to thin it down. To give an idea, I am talking about 9000 contacts in gmail.

Thanks
