Would like an external USB DVD drive. Would not like to pay Apple Superdrive price.

Any good alternatives ?

Look here for some.

Also know, that the bigger optical disk drives (ODD) like the LG one for 60 USD, have far better write speeds and are not as prone to break as those flimsy notebook ODDs. I have that LG since 2007 and it survived quite a lot and it still works, for when I need to do some dirty stuff.

Agreed. I just bought a 24x LG drive and it works great. Built like a tank, tray loading, external power brick. Not good if you want to travel but it's a nice fast drive for use at home.

I have the same drive since mid 2007, it withstood hundreds of burned DVDs and CDs and hundreds of ripped DVDs and CDs and is still working, though I have not that much use for it, maybe twice in half a year.
