Third party AV adapters + 2016 MacBook

I have tried three third party display adapters across two monitors with my 2016 MacBook all have output irregularities (image flickers, incorrect resolution). Bought the Apple AV adapter, works fine. All these adapters work using my colleagues 2015 MacBook outputting to the same displays. What's going on?
