I don't know that I'm asking for a solution so much as I am musing about what is going on. I purchased a third party charger with an attached cable soon after I got my first generation iPhone. I plugged it into the dock that came with the phone and used it happily on my dresser to charge the phone overnight.

Last week I moved to a 3G. The dock doesn't fit the new phone, so I unplugged the charger from the dock and plugged directly into my new 3G phone. Up pops a message that says this device doesn't support charging. And to be sure, the battery icon in the upper right corner of the screen doesn't show the lightning bolt that indicates charging is taking place.

Why do you suppose plugging this thing into the dock made it work, but it won't work when plugged directly into the phone?

BTW, it also refuses to charge my wife's iPod touch, although it will charge an older nano.
