My USB to Dock cable that came with my iPhone 3GS got broken. The end near the USB got frayed. I'm thinking of getting a cheap third party cable. Is it safe? Will it have an effect on my phone (ie. battery life or mess it up real bad)

In all likelihood it will be better than the cheaply-built ones Apple uses. At some point in time, Apple decided to make the nib that protects the cord from doing that shorte and thus crappy. There's a technical name for the part I'm referring to, but I can't recall it. Basically, Apple USB cables are now some of the worst. I've had 3 break on me, but they were just the ones that came with my devices, I'd never buy the Apple-branded ones.
