Hi all,

In 13 months my keyboard keys are stuck for the third time. Apple did a toplevel replacement twice. During the second repair the damaged the display, so thats done too.
Now they installed the 2019 keyboard in my 2018 macbook pro 15. Again after 3 months of use keys are stuck. The space and C are unusable.

What do you guys recommend I do? I just cannot forever go to the apple store after 3 months to replace the keyboard (well for 4 years). There is not a new model, so a new machine probably won't help me. This is really a big problem for me. I also don't understand why some never have this issue and I have it each time...

Your failure rate seems inordinately high. I cannot help but wonder if your failures are related to something you are doing. Many people, I suspect even most people, do not have a single keyboard failure. You have had three, and they are all stuck keys? Do you eat over your computer? Drink over it? Does someone else? I would recommend you have the keyboard replaced again, and then ask yourself “what might I be doing to precipitate these failures?”

Your machine has had 3 repairs, DEMAND replacement machine. They'll give you a 2019 model which actually runs a lot better than the 2018s. Also, 3 keyboard failures isn't even that high.
I've had 7 across 4x 2018s (and the last 2018 had a 2019 keyboard and it started duplicating keypresses as well.)
I demanded a 2019 replacement and got it, and so far it's been fine after 2 months, whereas keyboards on the 2018s were failing within DAYS (though the 2019 keyboard they put in the 2018 failed after a month). Also, if the only issue is that keys are getting stuck, compressed air will fix your problem. My issues were the keys would think i pressed it multiple times even if i pressed a key once.

I had the same problem. So I moved away from MBP.
But what can help is to cool down your MBP. You obviously stress it out, so try to elevate it by using some stand or anything. My friend found that to be rather helpful.

If you can't move away from MacOS, one more solution is to sell the device, or try to return it to Apple, and purchase 2015 MBP.

Sure. It's the users fault Apple is selling crappy keyboards now?
I had multiple failures as well. Even more than OP. But I never had keyboard failures on pre-2016 MBP, or any other laptop.

And no, I don't eat near my computer. But I use it for more then just surfing and watching youtube videos.

Fair point, but do you really think that after the first replacement I wouldn't use my machine in an ultra clean room with a can of compressed air next to it;)

Hi Eeden,

I had the same issue as you. I had my 2017 MBP keyboard replaced a total of 4 times due to issues with sticking keys. I had an issue again recently and the apple genius bar replaced a key and it worked fine -- i was happy it didnt require another replacement. Unfortunately, something happened with the backlight after that and it shines much brighter than the other keys. I brought it back next day and they said they will replace it with a brand new unit. I knew there was rumors of a redesign keyboard this Fall, thus me declining their offer for a replacement. I am sticking with the defective key light until the new ones get released. I'm tired of the butterfly keyboard since they are so sketchy. My boyfriend had an issue with his '19 as well, so I didn't want to bother with the current generation.

Bring it back and have them keep repairing it until they offer a replacement then tell them you want to hold off on it like I did.

Multiple people have reported that repeatedly "banging" on bad keys sometimes restores them to working order again. Speculation is the dome under the key may get stuck inverted, and the "banging" sometimes reverts it properly. I figure you've got nothing to lose trying, right?
