I've been noticing the md~ processes such as mds (in particular) and mdimport using quite a lot of CPU recently upwards of 90% and having a VM size of 100-160MB then me killing the process.
Then I noticed this:

have you tried the basics, like repairing permissions and stuff?

I suggest you use a program like onyx or cocktail to rebuild your index.

My thinking is it keeps indexing my external hard drive, which I saw it attempt to once and it took over 3 hours, and it keeps repeating itself, I've excluded it from being indexed more than twice yet straight after I did it, it would start indexing again.
I just repaired permissions and mds and mdworker have calmed down. But the RSize of mds is still 83MB.
