My buddy copied his data stick to his MBP right before the stick went TU. When he tries to open some of the files, it says they are in use by OS X and can't be modified/opened. Any idea how to fix this? I've never seen it on my Mac. Thanks.

K.What was the format of the stick? Was it a Mac format or Windows. If it was a Mac format you may have copied over a locked file.

I'd shut down any program that the files use as their native app.

I have this same problem with my external HD. It's a cheap kit I used to basically take an old pc HD and put it to use as an external. Long story short, I was copying some videos to a different folder and I got the same problem. The only way to get rid of it I believe is to reformat. But I'll ignore it until I have to do a new backup before Leopard.
