But does the Verizon iPhone 5 have a sim card slot on the side? I know the 4 doesn't, but I thought I saw it on the 5.
 
No, it's not a stupid question. Verizon iPhones have not had SIM cards up until now.

WRONG, they have had SIM cards when LTE phones first came to Verizon.

Which will allow you to Sim swap between phones without calling to activate anything, assuming you have adapters that will allow you to use nanosims in mircrosim and full sims.

The 4S has a sim card for international purposes. Wasn't critical to use on Verizon's network, but the Verizon 4S did have a sim card.

Stupid question #2: so why would verizon have sim card slots?

Before the 5, for international travel since the 4S is a world phone since it can work on GSM networks as well. For the 5, LTE requires a SIM card.
