this may sound stupid...but how do i upload an avatar

Until you have over 500 posts, you can't. Then when you do, it's the same as uploading a profile picture. By that I mean you simply click "upload", you select the file, and you're all set.
This has been asked many times, look it up in the forum rules or search for it. You MUST have 500 posts.
