Does the new Finder with new APFS still use those annoying hidden files, like .DS_Store etc?
From the discussions I perused, it seems that these have not gone away...

For previous Finder versions, I've been annoyed by adding/removing files in a directory and not seeing it reflected in my finder window until I create a new Finder window. Is that retained in the new High Sierra?

Nothing in that regard has changed. It sounds like you have either a really old computer with little RAM/Video RAM, or you have some other software issue. Finder windows update virtually instantly for me — even over a slow server connection.

Thanks, I cannot make it happen now. (iMac (27 inch, Late 2013, with 16 GB RAM & 1TB Fusion HD)
Usually notice it when a new file is downloaded and don't see that reflected in open Finder window in the Downloads folder. I have 3 external mounts over USB 3, so perhaps that may relate to Finder not updating if one of the disks is not responding.

If I ever find what conditions can make it happen, I'll update this thread and report the issue to Apple.
It does seem to me that this has been happening to me (intermittently) for a long time, over last several OSes and on previous Macs (all with external disks mounted, either Firewire or USB). If nobody else has noticed this, you are probably correct and this may be something specific to my setup... or LAN disk mounts which I have quit using.

I have heard of that problem before, but it is only in regards to having your finder set to show "folder sizes." From my understanding, that was an HFS+ issue, and not really a "finder" issue, as it lists the files one by one as it calculates the folder size. (The more folders, files, subfolders) the longer it takes.

I believe that APFS rectifies this on SSD drives, and folder sizes are shown almost instantly.

Thanks, but likely not exactly the same issue as I do not show folder sizes, i.e. my View Options do NOT have "Calculate all sizes" checked and I do not see folder sizes. At least this is just a rarely-rarely-occuring minor annoyance...
