...what makes you so sure you will land a phone on the 24th? If there are truly this many people crashing servers trying to order a phone in advance, I can only imagine the mass of humanity waiting in lines on the 24th.

because not all of those people hitting the website today (not all wanting to buy, and from all over the world) will be bothered about waiting in Manchester next Thursday. Plus a large % of those on the apple site today will have pre-ordered or reserved by now, and so also won't be part of the equation either.
