I just noticed today with the sun at 45deg behind me that the perforated strip along the top of the KB and below the screen highlighted 4 rectangular areas

I hadn’t given it much thought before and assumed the strip was mainly for ventilation etc

On further investigation (looking at Ifixit tear down) I see the 4 little areas are the speaker outlets and the rest of the perforations are not, they are just cosmetic blind holes to mask the speakers perforations.

Not that it matters a dam, I was just surprised my assumption was wrong

I bet it uses convection air flow to help with cooling. So they may very well be necessary for cooling.
I bet you are mistaken. Have a look inside it at iFixit. Everything is concealed. Anyway, this is not a subject want to argue about, so I am leaving it here.
