My experience at the apple store in Salem, NH was different than that. As they let customers in the store, you walk up to a sales associate they asked how many phones you wanted, you handed them your ID and credit card. I picked my plan, signed the service contract and then paid for the phone. Once the phone was paid for, we went to the Genius Bar to get the phone activated via iTunes. However, iTunes was down and I left with an unactivated phone. Now I have to wait to try to activate the phone when I get home from work this evening.
