Quick suggestion for someone in manufacturing: Make a female-lightning to male-old-style converter that is way smaller than Apple's. I'm thinking it may be possible to make it small enough to almost completely fit inside the connector hole on old-style devices (ie: iPads). It could be left there more or less permanently, allowing the new style lightning plug to be easily moved from iPhone to iPad when charging is required.
Just to be clear, while Apple's convertor no doubt does a great job of the conversion, it's not something that could be left attached to the old-style device. What I'm proposing would be, and wouldn't stick out much (perhaps a couple of millimeters).
Charging would be the main purpose for me, since syncing can all be done wirelessly. I'd like to be able to stick with a single cable standard, cutting down on the clutter while traveling.
Bottom line: Apple's converters are too big to leave attached. Perhaps someone enterprising and with manufacturing chops can make a minimalist version. Perhaps a kickstarter project.
