I was reading an article earlier today about the iPhone 5 that mentioned the Galaxy S IV, expected to be introduced in feb and released in the spring. It mentioned that this revision probably wouldn't see the inclusion of a flexible display.

Every time I read something about flexible displays, I think, "how would such a component effectively be integrated into an actual product that contains more components than said display?"

Being an engineer, I'm puzzled by exclamations of how awesome it'll be when the displays are flexible. Now, I'm not saying it'll never happen, especially in some accessory and perhaps device at some point far down the road.

But, this will not be a reality for standalone devices until the chip is flexible, the battery is flexible, the enclosure is flexible, etc. As far as I've seen, none of that is technically feasible for several years.

I did see one manifestation in an Apple patent app where they had a display that may be flexible on a smart cover-like accessory that could be powered and driven by the primary device. That may not be too far off.

Anyway, just my rambling thoughts. Needed to tell someone because my wife couldn't care less to hear about it. We are a long ways from a flexible GS phone. It's kinda silly, really.
