The subject pretty much says it all. Maybe the answer is obvious. And maybe I'm still stuck on the old idea that lithium ion batteries need to occasionally be fully charged and fully depleted to "train" them (which I'm pretty sure is no longer a thing?).

I've been using the 80% optimization on my 15 Pro, but there have been some days where I would've preferred to start at 100% rather than 80%. Coming from a regular 13, my average day still has me at 30-40% by bedtime if I don't give it a quick boost in the evening - that's starting at 100%. On the 15 Pro it's usually less, so I'm feeling the need to give it that evening boost more often. The health on my 13, which was a year old, was still at 100% when I handed it down and got the 15 Pro. So the standard optimization seemed to be working great on that phone for my usage. 🤷‍♂️

Maybe this is a question where only time will tell...

The new 80% max charge limit on iPhone 15 phones really is suited for people who keep their phone plugged in all the time. Always On display and Standby Mode on the iPhone 15 series are perfectly suited for this.
But if an 80% charge won’t make it through your day and you don’t want to bump it up with a power bank sometimes, then it’s not a good choice in that scenario. Optimize Charging (if it works) would be better.

The charge/discharge thing was for Nickel Cadmium and other batteries because they had a memory effect which doesn't apply to Lithium Ion and one of the worst things you can do is completely drain them. If you frequently fall below a 20% charge then I wouldn't limit a full charge to 80%.

I personally don't worry about the battery. The phone does a good enough job. I upgrade at a minimum every three years. I have never had a battery not make it through the 3 years with an issue. So why spend the effort in trying to extend the battery life as long as possible? One less thing to be anal about.

Good point. I think 80% is working fine with the occasional bump on heavier days. I haven't been below 20% yet (though close a few times).

I don't know if that's any better than Optimized Charging as far as long term wear and tear goes or not. Though, I guess the bump during the day/evening is only a small amount and not pushing it to those extremes regardless.
