When pre-orders came around I ended up ordering a 42mm SS Black Classic Buckle, a SS link band (just the band) and also a SB SS link . I was really torn between the SS and the SB SS and really wanted a link band and something with a deployment clasp (which I am looking into for the black classic buckle).
The following day, I went to an Apple Store to try on some watches. I was a bit worried the link band might be too snug as I have big wrists. Luckily they had the Space Black available to try on. I was a bit disappointed with the SB SS. The watch itself was far too glossy (almost like a candy coat), and the band was more of a brushed texture. I was really hoping for something like my current watch's finish (which is also black), more of a matte. The link fit well, but I was shocked at how light the watch was with the link on. I was hoping for something a bit more substantial.
I ended up going home and cancelling my SB SS order. Even though the regular SS had a similar contrast in finishes (polished watch, brushed bracelet), it blended better with natural stainless and the polished black SS looked a bit like it could be mistaken for plastic.
Fast forward to release day and I had no watch, my cousin had ordered 2 42mm SG sports for him and his wife. His wife unfortunately wasn't interested, so he offered to sell it to me. I really loved the color and matte finish of the SG, Sport so I decided I'd try it out until my SS arrived. If I liked it enough, I'd cancel or sell my SS, if I didn't then I'd do the same with the SG Sport. I really loved the color and finish of the SG Sport, but wasn't a huge fan of it's weight or the sport band.
I got the 42mm SS black classic buckle this morning and have been using it for the day today. At this point, I think I'm going to be sticking with the SS watch and the link band (when it arrives).
Random thoughts/rankings:
1) Finish: I'd say the finish of the Sport model was more to my liking followed by SS and then SB SS. I love matte finishes on my watches, but only darker colors. The lightest I'd go is the color of space grey or titanium. The polished finish of the SB SS just didn't do it for me.
2) Weight: SS all the way, I like something a bit more substantial on my wrist. That being said, the weight of the Sport models suits it much better if it was going to be used for working out. Between the sport band and the weight of the Sport, I could barely tell I had a watch on.
What would be my perfect Apple watch? Probably a titanium matte link band, or a matte black link band. I am also hoping someone makes a wooden link band, I'd pair that to my SS in a heart beat. Here's to hoping for Apple Watch 2.
