Meta today announced it is rolling out two new Threads features that will give users more control over the visibility of content on the platform.

First, new "mentions" and "people you follow" filters in the Activity tab will allow you to fine-tune the replies that are visible in the feed.

Second, a new "review and approve replies" option when drafting a post will allow you to approve replies to your post before they are visible to the public.

The features will be available in the Threads app on iPhone, and presumably on other platforms.

Threads is a social media platform that competes with X, formerly known as Twitter, as well as Bluesky and Mastodon. Meta launched Threads in 2023, less than a year after Elon Musk acquired Twitter, and it works with an Instagram account.

Meta says Threads has hit 150 million daily active users.

At this point is threads just all bots?
🤷‍♂️ Only Meta really knows the answer to this.

Threads was decent for a few weeks and then it was overran. Bluesky became more widely used.
A quick search shows that just isn't the case.

Threads has over 400 million monthly active users and around 115.1 million daily active users. Even if half of those 115.1 million daily active users are bots, that's still over 57.5 million daily active users. (* Meta reported earnings last night and said they now have over 150 million daily active Threads users).

Bluesky? They have 38.26 million users and around 4.1 million daily active users. That's around 7.1% of the number of Threads' daily active users even if we were to say half of them are bots.

If we use Meta's updated 150 million daily active Threads user number and still say half are bots, that would mean Bluesky has less than 5.5% of the daily active users of Threads.

No more updates to ActivityPub integration? Or they just did that so people wouldn't choose Mastodon over their crappy platform when everyone was fleeing Twitter?

Actually, Meta needs to make one change to Threads: increase the number of characters per post from 500 to 1000, and actually show how many characters you have left when typing each post. It's actually a surprisingly nice platform but it also needs independent moderators outside of Meta control, too.

this thing seems to HEAVILY rely on raigebait . every single featured post I've seen was either sexual or outrageous. both of which cater to more primal instincst. granted, that's sensational "media" , facebook isn't far off .

basically modus operandi of all major big social media (X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)?

Recently I tried Mastodon again (after a couple of failed attempts in the past and recently using bluesky) and I'm loving it - only people, mostly funny / quirky / nerdy poats that are absurdly variable and (to a point) random but also interesting 🫶

I haven't noticed reddit having that pattern, granted, the fact that each topic is separated within its own subreddit is wonderful.

I might have a look at mastodon. I'll admit i'm relatively new to this, and i'm trying to figure out how to aggregate/where to find the best news that aren't political . might look into RSS , but then again i'd have to know which sources I want to use, and got no clue

Bluesky is way too toxic. Nothing is good out there on Bluesky.

It didn’t have a mentions tab before????
How does every social network that copies Twitter manage to miss this every single time?

Bluesky didn’t have a mentions tab/filter for the longest time either and I don’t understand how anyone designs a social network and doesn’t immediately go “hey we should make sure replies don’t get lost in the endless sea of “X liked your post” and “X followed you”
