I screen shared Mac Mini M1 desktop to my 4K Samsung 65" TV today for the first time. It's connected to a 4K Apple TV.

With macOS Monterey, I went to the control panel (on the menubar) and selected "Screen Mirroring"

I selected the WiFi-connected Apple TV as Screen Mirroring target, and was presented a list from which to choose
which of the two Mac Mini monitors to use (the one on the Thunderbolt port or one on the HDMI port).
But there was a 3rd option: To use the Apple TV as an additional display, which I did. And it was fantastic.

I moved the TV close-ish to my desk. The TV looked so good and worked so well it was like having a 3rd monitor.
The TV, being much bigger than a monitor, gave effect of being a very real and useful monitor, wherein being further away was an advantage by allowing my desk to feel less cramped and closed in. A great effect.

The TV was perfect for web browsing, reading API documentation, a place to stash an XCode simulator window, etc... things I would tend to move onto 3rd monitor for reference. Not sure how well it would do with content that required a fast refreshing or high throughput, but perfect for what I needed it for. Prefer it to having a 3rd monitor at my desk. Very liberating.
