I'm considering getting the new MacBook or Macbook Pro). I know you can use one additional screen (not mirrored, but displays different material). Can you set up three screens to all display different material?

The answer may affect which laptop I buy.

One more....my currrent screen (HP L1950) has DVI and VGA connectors. Are these compatible with the new MacBook or Pro?

Thanks!

First question: no, not possible (at least not right now). There's hackish ways to do this with the old MacBook Pros with things like the Matrox dual/triple head boxes, but no way for the mini displayport that I'm aware of.

Second question: This has been discussed to death, and the answer is also right on Apple's web site. Yes, you can use any monitor you want with the new MacBooks, you just have to buy an adapter -- in your case, a mini displayport to DVI adapter.
