Thumb Drive Issues

"....cannot be copied because there is not enough free space." This is the message even after deleting all files from the thumb drive. How can I reclaim the space on my thumb drives (it does this will all of them)? This didn't seem to happen until I started using them on my imac (10.4.10), but now it doesn't seem to really delete them (the space is still used up) even though the files are not in the file list anymore. Any ideas?

you need to empty the trash while the drive is still plugged in

yeah, i find that there are a lot of things that seemed so simple until i got a mac. thanks for your help everybody and i'll probably be back
