I was scanning black and white photos using Photoshop elements 4 and saving them as jpegs. I imported them to iPhoto and find the thumbnails are black (see attached screenshot)

The images were scanned as 8 bit grayscale and saved as jpegs. The images appear normal when viewed in a slide show or edited in iPhoto. Its just the thumbnails that are black. If I edit a photo the thumbnail becomes visible and if I do a revert to original the thumbnail remains visible.

Weird, huh? Any thoughts?

I just had a thought that it might be a brightness issue and iPhoto can't display the image. Any adjustment to brightness makes the thumbnail visible. I use Huey to calibrate my monitor.

Yeah, iPhoto struggles with some Photoshop JPG imports. As far as I know, Apple knows about this bug and tried to fix it in 6.0.1 but obviously didn't get anywhere.

I found the problem. I scanned the picture as a grayscale image. When I scan it as a color image the thumbnails are fine.
