Thunderbird Help

Hello, my Thunderbird is crashing every time I open it. It downloads duplicate copies of my latest emails (like 5 or 6 copies of each new message) and then crashes. I've tried restarting, reinstalling etc. and nothing works. Any ideas?

Is there anyway to save my email and then wipe all the Thunderbird files not wiped when I put the application in the trash?
