Recently upgraded to 10.9 and a new network adapter called 'Thunderbolt Bridge' has appeared.

Does that mean I can string a thunderbolt cable between two Macs, assign an IP address to each end and use it like a point-to-point Ethernet network for file sharing etc., but running at Thunderbolt speeds?

...you could do it with Firewire and its something I've found useful from time to time.

(I'd suck it and see, but I don't have a thunderbolt cable and another 10.9-equipped Mac handy right now, but it opens various possibilities... Mac Mini as a 'thunderbolt dock'?)

A quick web serach on "thunderbolt bridge" found: OS X 10.9 brings fast but choppy Thunderbolt networking.
