MacBook Pro is:
MODEL A1398 EMC2876
OSX YOSEMITE VERSION 10.10
MACBOOK PRO (RETINA 15-INCH , MID 2014
SERIAL NUMBER: C02NT63DG3QC
I found there are two USB ports showing in the specs up to 5Gbps.
Is there a specific Thunderbolt cable I need to choice from as I see Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 1 Thunderbolt 2 Thunderbolt 3 listed.
This is for a gift to a friend who needs a BluRay device to connect to his MacBook. I need to choose the correct cable.
Thanks for any advise on making the best choice.
Sincerely

I connect my 3 Blu-Ray drives via USB. You don't need thunderbolt speeds. USB 2 is 480 Mbps theoretical which is much more than a 4K UHD bitrate which can reach ~100 Mbps.

If the drive exists I'd use the cable which is often supplied by the drive manufacturer. As always make sure things are returnable if you run into problems.

Thunderbolt 1 and Thunderbolt 2 cables are the same.

I don't think there are any Thunderbolt BlueRay players.

As joe said above, there probably aren't any tbolt bluray players.

What kind of cable you need depends on what kind of OUTPUT PORTS are on the bluray player.
I'm going to guess that it's USB2 or USB3.

For a 2014 MacBook Pro, just use a USB3 cable.
