i have a lot of movies on my Macbook and i connect it to my television using the Thunderbolt cable, is it possible to have the movie displayed on the TV in the background while still using the computer for internet? If so what program is is it called?

Quicktime can do this. If the two displays are different spaces then you can full screen the movie on the TV and bring your mouse back to your laptop screen.

Another option is to connect an Apple TV to the TV. Turn on file sharing in the Mac. Now the Apple TV can access content from you local Mac and content from the Internet via wifi from your local wifi network. Apple TV gives you many more content options and for a relatively small investment.
