This was my idea:
I have Tb Display, Mac mini (Late 2012 i7) and rMBP 13" (sig).
I want to connect Tb cable from Display to Mac mini and MagSafe to rMBP for charging.
This is possible but not very practical because of short part of cable from split point. To do this Mac mini and rMBP have to be very close.....
So.....Tb Display has one more Tb port (female) for daisy chaining, but I found out that you can use this port with separate Tb cable in the same way as the original cable.
I bough Apple Thunderbolt 2m cable and connected it from female Tb connector of the display to the Mac mini, and original split cable from Display is now free to go at the other part of desk where is rMBP to charge it.
And it works!
Now, about the original Tb connector from the Display.
If you connect both thunderbolt cables to display it will display image from the source you connected first, but you can still use Thunderbolt as Thunderbolt Brigde network and have blazingly fast network between Mac mini and rMBP (in my case this two machines). Of course you will have to have VERY fast SSD drives to saturate this link.
There is only one side effect when you connect both thunderbolt ends to 2 machines.
About this mac and System Profiler will say that there is no Display connected....but don't worry, there is
Display works, USB hub, FW, eth, speakers, samera....everything works fine.
When I connect only external Tb cable to Mac mini, and use original cable only for charging, all is well.
I wanted to share this, because I find this very useful. In this situation, if I want to connect external Tb storage to Mac mini, I will just connect it to original Tb Display cable, nothing is wasted here.
