Well my iPP is on the way. Now I’m wondering if there are new Thunderbolt docks out there that could support this new iPad’s capabilities to support Thunderbolt? To take advantage of Thunderbolt speeds do docks need to be powered externally? Sorry for the dumb question.

Docks, especially Thunderbolt Docks are powered externally.
Makes sense, thank you. I have a MacSales/OWC Thunderbolt Dock I use on my M1 MacMini. I could probably draft that into use should I really need Thunderbolt with the 2021 iPP. Otherwise I hope my Hyper-Drive iPad device will do for simple imports of photos from an SD card.

Thunderbolt docks are a bag of hurt, traditionally.

Let’s hope Thunderbolt 4/USB4 will prove that wrong

I have a OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock with a Thunderbolt 4 dock attached to it, one cord goes to everything, printers, keyboard, monitor etc ... it works just fine with the iPad. They are expensive but worth it. I have a cheap Anker USB-C hub for travel, and a Sandisk 2TB Extreme SSD if I need any faster transfer speeds ...
