I plugged my new Buffalo MiniStation Thunderbolt USB 3.0 2 TB Portable Hard Drive into the Thunderbolt port on my late 2015 MacBook Pro, using the cable provided by Buffalo, and everything went as expected. I backed up the MBP to the Buffalo drive.

But when I used the cable to link the Buffalo to my trusty early MacBook Air, a puff of smoke came from the port and the screen went dark.

I looked inside the case and the only chip that seems to be fried is the one that powers the Thunderbolt port. (at top right of board)
My questions:
1. Can the logic board be repaired?
2. Who does this?
3. How much is such a repair likely to cost?
4. Is using the Thunderbolt port inherently risky (I really don't want to lose my MBP)?
thanks!

I think it might be better too just upgrade at this point i don’t think you find a lot of places open right now due to COVID-19 Restrictions.

Get hold of these guys: ROSSMANN REPAIR GROUP. They'll fix it no problem. Doesn't matter if there's a pandemic going on. You don't deal with them directly; you send it to them via UPS or whatever, they fix it and send it back. Done. They're the best in the business.

Contact Buffalo and ask for an explanation! Talk to Apple and ask if they've seen this happen.

Browse the net and see what others have experienced. That is bizarre!

Took your advice and now have M1 Air. Next question: how do I connect Apple Superdrive to read optical disks and install software? I get error message about power supply, even though I used a USB-C hub to link the drive to the Air. Tried to load the contents of the Adobe Photoshop disk to my Cloud drive, but this effort was unsuccessful.

Took above steps, awaiting replies. Thanks!
