I plugged my new Buffalo MiniStation Thunderbolt USB 3.0 2 TB Portable Hard Drive into the Thunderbolt port on my late 2015 MacBook Pro, using the cable provided by Buffalo, and everything went as expected. I backed up the MBP to the Buffalo drive.
But when I used the cable to link the Buffalo to my trusty early MacBook Air, a puff of smoke came from the port and the screen went dark.
I looked inside the case and the only chip that seems to be fried is the one that powers the Thunderbolt port. (at top right of board)
My questions:
1. Can the logic board be repaired?
2. Who does this?
3. How much is such a repair likely to cost?
4. Is using the Thunderbolt port inherently risky (I really don't want to lose my MBP)?
thanks!
