I keep getting this same update every now and then even though I installed it a while back, it won't go away...

It means you haven't installed it. Your Thunderbolt firmware version in system profile should 22.1 after the update. If it's not then you clearly still have work to do.
 
i'm having an issue too. I get the reboot and then the grey screen with the status bar, but then my system does a restart, before the progress bar even starts, and then just boots back into OSX

Those were the symptoms i had. I finally got it to install. I made sure it was plugged in shut it down then turned it on and immediatly ran software update. dont know if doing it this way actually did anything but it finally installed.
 
Same problem here. The computer shuts down without installing the update.
