Thunderbolt->mini DisplayPort external monitor not working

I have a Philips BDM4065UC/00 40" monitor that I use with my mid 2014 MBP Retina connected by a Thunderbolt->mini DisplayPort. I have upgraded to Big Sur & now the monitor doesn't work with Thunderbolt & I can only connect HDMI->HDMI but this is 30Hz rather than 60Hz via Thunderbolt. I see occasional flashes of an image but mostly I just see the awful horrible coloured Big Sur screen on the laptop but no login. I assume the MBP 'thinks' that the monitor is working & has put the login screen there.

Does anyone else have this problem?
