Hi guys, I got this 2hand Macbook (warranty expired) few months ago, I had never test the thunderbolt display port or USB till few days ago I found out it just doesn't work.

The thunderbolt still work with power connection, but doesn't work with display port or USB. I got an USB hub which still light on when plug-in the Macbook, but Macbook couldn't recognize it. The same issue with display port, no display signal was found.

I thought it might be my Macbook has been repaired or fixed something on mainboard before, so I brought this to a repair store, they told me my Macbook haven't been repaired before and hardware seems fine.

I tried every methods to fix it, reset PRAM, SMC but none of them ever work.
(actually I don't know it I reset PRAM correctly, the manual said release the keys on the 2nd start up sound, but no sound for me at all, so I release it after few times screen show up with black screen)

Have any one experience this issue and do you guys have any idea this could be software or hardware issue? :( I'm very appreciate your helps. Thanks

To confirm, USB C and thunderbolt devices are NOT working? And you've tried them again after SMC and NVRAM resets regardless of what system report says? The devices and cable work on a different device correct? Very often people are convinced its the Mac because like you the "no hardware found" message or something obvious sticks out on the Mac side which seems to prove something however often time its the device or cable (make sure the cable is for data).

Call Apple, they don't always help immediately however they've changed my thinking and lead me in the correct direction.

Check system preferences for updates/patches.

Check App store in updates sections for updates/patches. Thunderbolt firmware updates have been pushed through the app store in years past however now I would expect to see that in MacOS updates in system preferences.

Do you see Thunderbolt Bridge settings in network settings?

Run Apples hardware diagnostic (hold D on start up I believe). Follow instructions and regardless if it finds a problem boot back into MacOS and test the ports.

Boot into recovery (I prefer internet recovery) and run first aid on the SSD. You'll likely need to mount the SSD, select user (you), enter your password, then run first aid. Regardless if you see if fix errors or not boot back into MacOS and test the ports.

Reinstall MacOS from internet recovery by selecting "Reinstall macOS". I believe this will replace Apples kext plus their associated files with the latest unmodified versions.
