Is there any available at the moment to use with time machine and are they any better?

So what would the uses of a thunderbolt portable hdd be

Thanks

Ian

It's not worth it to buy a portable thunderbolt hard drive for Time Machine. Time Machine will never be able to take advantage of TB's speed; the bottleneck is almost always the processor.

What? You've got this wrong.

To be able to transfer data quickly. The first TM backup will be several magnitudes faster, but you can argue that subsequent, incremental backups are normally too small to take advantage of TB speed. It all depends on how often you backup using TM and whether you have it on always.

For starters, it would hopefully allow us to boot off the SSD drive of our choice at its native speed without having to disembowel our iMacs.

Secondly, presuming it had a second outlet, it could be daisy chained to another peripheral like a monitor and not require hubs for multiple devices.

Mostly the first. M'yeah. Daddy like.
