Recently switched from Windows to Mac by purchasing a Mid 2012 13" MBP after coveting OSX for some time. I cheaped out and got a no-brand DisplayPort to VGA connector on Amazon for $8 so I could use with my Digital Galaxy (read cheapest on ebay) projector. Plugged it in and the Mac immediately reduced its screen resolution, but the projector did not recognize a valid VGA signal. If I remember correctly, when I went into System Preferences -> Displays it didn't even recognize a second display. That was a while ago, in terms of systems updates; I just did it again and it it reduced my screen so much that I could only see like 5 items on the dock and then the whole computer locked up and had to be restarted. I feel like there's some funny business with the thunderbolt port not working 100% like DisplayPort as promised but here's the thing: IT WORKED OUT OF THE BOX WITH WINDOWS 8 (Consumer Preview)!

So the hardware is at least compatible, and my friends with older MBPs have had complete success with the adapter. I don't want to go around the internet installing random drivers because I'm still new to Mac OS. Can anyone please point me in the right direction? I hate getting a Mac and then being trapped in Windows 8 just so I can use my projector.

THANKS!

MacBook Pro (non-retina) 13" Mid-2012 OS X 10.7.5 (all updated other than going 10.8)
