Hello all,
In preparation for Lion, I'm in the process of going through and cleaning up files on my MBP.
I've noticed that my ~/Library/Mail/ folder is a massive 8.06GB in size, and am not too sure why. I have an MobileMe account, and also a GMail account, both of which I use IMAP for.
On my computer, the MobileMe account takes up 2.61GB. On the server, it only takes up 1.4GB. Similarly, the GMail account is taking up 5.41GB (!!) on my computer, but only 1.5GB on the server. So there's about 3.94GB of wasted space on my Mac for some reason.
I'm wondering if it's safe to delete all the /Attachment/ folders? (For example, Sent Messages.imapmbox/Attachments/ . Even if I do this, are the attachments are still saved within the .emlx files saved in the Sent Messages.imapmbox/Messages/ ? I say this because I notice that even if I find an email with an attachment, close Mail.app, delete the corresponding file in the /Attachments/ folder, and re-open mail, the attachment is still there (i.e. it doesn't need to be re-downloaded from the server).
What I would idealy like to do is save all the bodies of the emails I have received, and be able to search them all locally within Mail.app. However, I'd like to remove all downloads, so that they're not taking up space on my Mac, but if I ever need to download them from the server again, I can just click and they will download (just how you would do with an attachment in iOS). Does anyone have any idea how to do this?
Thanks in advance.
