tiger upgrade dvd workaround ?

does anyone know of a workaround for this scenario.

mac mini G4 1.42 bought from ebay
only disc it came with was tiger upgrade dvd (originally pre-installed with panther - but those discs were not supplied)

HDD has been wiped, and now can't use the upgrade DVD unless panther is on the HDD.

is there any way to get round this without having to source panther CDs and/or retail copy os 10.4 ?

i have 10.4 CDs that came with another mac mini (G4 1.5) but trying those gives the alert of "this software cannot be installed on this PC".

Buy Panther off eBay? Its going quite cheap now.

I've read that you can take one file off the image and burn it to another dvd and it won't check anymore. I believe it was posted to www.macosxhints.com

i'd rather not have to buy anything to get it going again.

Do you have to have Panther? Can't you do a full install from another OS (like buy the "full install" of 10.5, not just the upgrade version)

If the machine came with Panther, only a Tiger Retail box will boot on the machine.

Has to be the retail OS "after" the machine was made, since the machines only boot an OS newer than the previous retail OS.

Example: Panther retail is 10.3 and the machine "may" only boot with panther 10.3.5

Contact Apple and ask for the restore DVDs for the machine, they may be something like $20-25 for a new set.

Especially since the Tiger Upgrade DVD is the OS only, and not the software that came with the machine.

Or wait until friday and buy Leopard.

i managed to get a tiger installation DVD... and it appeared to install all ok until the first reboot.

i get a kernel dump (i think) almost straight away (see attached image).

any ideas ?
