Tiger upgrade.

I know this may be a pretty dumb question, but when I was about to pre-order Tiger I quickly looked at the 'how to upgrade' section. All this mentions is that Tiger takes about 30 mins to upgrade and keeps your pictures, movies, mail etc, but it did not mention applications.
Will applications from 10.3.9 work when I upgrade, and should I back up my hard drive. Or am I just panicking and all I have to do is whack in the Tiger DVD?

Do an archive & install and your data and apps will stay.

But, if at all possible, backup too, you can never be too careful.
