TikTok has announced it is introducing support for passkeys, providing an easier and more secure login method for users of the popular short-form video platform. Apple integrated passkeys into iOS with the launch of iOS 16, and they are also available in iPadOS 16.1 and later and macOS Ventura.

Passkeys are an industry standard developed by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium, so TikTok's passkey integration will work on Apple devices as well as on other devices that support the feature.

Passkeys are both easier to use and more secure than passwords because they let users sign in to apps and sites the same way they unlock their devices: With a fingerprint, a face scan or a screen lock PIN.

Apps using passkeys, including TikTok, cannot access or process any of the biometric data used in the authentication process on iOS devices, and all biometric authentication data remains on users' devices. Passkeys are also resistant to online attacks like phishing, making them more secure than things like SMS one-time codes.

Passkeys on iOS and Mac devices sync with iCloud Keychain for security purposes, and logins are authenticated with Face ID or Touch ID. This protects you from being locked out of your account in case you lose your devices, and makes it easier for you to upgrade from one device to another. Two-factor authentication must also be switched on for an Apple ID.

TikTok says it will begin rolling out passkeys for iOS in Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America beginning this month, and anticipates expanding in geographies and operating systems over time. TikTok users with access to the login option can enable it by going to their Profile at the bottom of the app and then accessing "Settings and privacy" in the Menu. From there, access the Account option and then tap iCloud passkey to enter the setup screen.

TikTok will still give all your info to the chinese government.

And Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Cisco, Oracle, Apple, Google, Microsoft, and countless others will continue giving all of yours to the US government. At least the CPC have zero jurisdiction or power over me. Xi can gobble up as much of my data as he wants LOL, why should I or anyone else in the US care exactly? Nobody that complains about the big scary CPC TikTok connection can give 1) concrete evidence as to why it's bad and therefore 2) why I or anyone else should care.

Anyway I wish what you were saying was true however ByteDance have taken massive steps in reducing the amount of data that streams back to China by creating a US based subsidiary because Zuck kept crying about a Chinese company absolutely dominating his failing platforms in gen Z market share. The "CPC have their tentacles in TikTok" meme is literally just a nothingburger wild goose chase primarily spurred on by Zuck because he hates competition. Next.

If your data has no value, why do these huge companies go to such an extent to extract it? Curious

The huge world ending scare, so frightening it demands a bill to ban TikTok and other Chinese social media, is about the CPC gaining access to that data specifically rather than ByteDance. So again I ask: why should I care about the CPC *specifically* having that data?

Meta, Google, and Microsoft have significant political power and sway in the US government so I'm concerned about *them* having access to my data, but why China?

I see you went around my question with your rephrased question you had for someone else.

Probably because my question stumped you :)

TLDR; There is value in personal data. That's why you should care. That's why the huge companies are after it. Can you do something about it? That's a different question

The only person avoiding the question is you. I posed the initial question: why should I, an average person, care about the CPC having access to my data considering I, an American, live in a sovereign state that China has no jurisdiction or explicit political power over?

You then asked a question that started with "If your data has no value, . . ." which is premised on something (data having no value) that I never stated and proceeded to ask a question about corporations in general having the data. So the rephrasing was done by you and you alone, probably because my question stumped you :)

Corporations want my data because they can use it to sell more product. The US government wants it so they can protect the corporations they work for. So let's try again, for the third time: Why should I care specifically about the Communist Party of China having my social media data?

I would love to go even more off topic with you about who you asked the initial question to (I wasnt even in the thread at the time), but let's move on.

Why should you SPECIFICALLY care (as you so lovingly put it)? YOU shouldn't, because you clearly don't, and I'm not here to tell you what you should or shouldn't care about.

Here to voice my 2 cents.

Pleasure talking to you

There are no secrets anymore. I wake up this morning to have an email from my health care provider who admits all of my information was stolen/hacked by an unknown individual. Just think of the number of companies who do not admit everything was stolen.

But one would have to be stupid to allow the chinese access to all of your passwords.

I wonder if Chinese officials look at the average

I wonder if Chinese government officials look at American Tik Tok videos and laugh, thinking "we have nothing to worry about."

You give them data on a need to know basis. Fake birthday, no access to contacts, selected photo access, alternative email address and don’t enter any optional data in your profile. You can even slightly misspell your name.

My sister did the fake birthday with google and it overrode her actual birthday in my contacts so be careful.

Don't use either
Facebook/Meta collects data on you whether you have an account with them or not.

Concern about Facebook Inc's respect for data privacy is widening to include the information it collects about non-users, after Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said the world's largest social network tracks people whether they have accounts or not.

You don't even need to be logged in to an account

@TheYayAreaLiving 🎗️ @Pinkyyy 💜🍎 .. I always find it hard to understand someone’s “wow” correctly.. anyway, my post wasn't to shock!
I get what you’re saying ! Though I can’t really imagine myself being on a platform like TikTok. A platform where most of the users are minors/teenagers, full of trivial content.. and not to mention those stories of kids dying because of a TikTok challenge.. No thanks !! Can’t imagine myself trusting that.
