Time Capsulare backup

ok, just ordered my new MBP and the question is how to restore my data from my old MB? Should copy past my data via WLan or is it better to update my new MBP via the backup option from time machine?. Issue is that I do have some never used applications on my old MB and don't want to put all the crap on the new MBP. so can I select the programs to restore or will it be easier to copy paste? thx.!
