Time Capsule and Attached Hard Drive

I'm considering getting a Time Capsule as a Time Machine target. My question is, if I attach an external drive directly to the Time Capsule USB port and Time Machine is working wirelessly, can Time Machine see the external hard drive and include it in my back up the way it would if it were directly attached to the mac? Any help is appreciated.
