Time Capsule and new WD 500GB external USB

So I bought the new WD My Passport Essential drive. I plugged into my new MBP via USB and did all the Time Capsule setup.

Everything seems to be working fine, but when the rest of the computer sleeps the drive spins away. I was about to assume that it wasn't sleeping the USB drive at all, when I had the rest of the computer awake ... but caught the external hard drive sleeping.

How do I need to configure this such that the drive sleeps when everything else does?

Edit: no I wasn't going to get the firewire version just for backups.
