A few colleagues and I will be sharing a Time Capsule and I had a couple of questions concerning privacy and efficiency. I should note I’m on a Windows 7 PC (have to be) and they are all using Macs.
1) Privacy: I used Google Desktop a while ago and found its comprehensive logging to be rather intrusive, even though it was just for my own sake. When thinking about sharing the Time Capsule, these privacy concerns came up for me:
-Email: Will it log or capture personal emails sent over gmail? I don’t mind if it captures my Outlook email but would not want my personal email captured (Desktop did this).
-Passwords: Related to email, will it log or capture all of my passwords?
-Dropbox: Will it capture my entire Dropbox folder(s)?
-Financial Software: I sometimes have a trading platform open during the day and when I do I glance at my account now and then. If I take a position, the program saves it. I would prefer not to be broadcasting my personal financial info (passwords, account size, trade size, etc)—will the Time Capsule capture all of that?
-Chrome bookmarks/browsing: I don’t care about this one as much as the above issues, but since the TC is also a router, I was wondering if it will capture all of my browser activity (or all internet traffic) and any bookmarks I save?
In short, can I maintain a modicum of privacy without sacrificing the back-up benefits of the Time Capsule?
2) Backing up just part of computer: Everybody else plans to back-up all computers, but they’re using Macs. Can I exclude the rest of the computer from the back-up process and just select one folder to be backed up? I save all of my work in one folder. If possible, this would alleviate my concerns above and I’ve also seen some complain that the frequency and timing of back-ups can bog down resources at inopportune times.
Those are my main concerns. If anybody has any recommendations for running the Time Capsule with Windows 7 (a solid third-party program, for instance), particularly in a customized way to address the above conerns, it would be most welcome. Thank you.
