I know there are lots of threads that discuss the painfully slow initial time it takes to do a time capsule backup. Something I noticed was that the speed of backing up is much slower than just dragging files onto the device. While doing a backup the speed stays at a consistent 2.0MB per second speed. While dragging a 35MB file to the device it transferred at a speed of 9.0MB per second. I also tried transferring this file while backing up and was still able to get speeds of 9.0MB per second for the 35 MB file being transfered.
Why are backing up speeds so much different than direct file transfers? Is it because it's writing to a sparseimage, doing some sort of check to make sure all the files are written correctly, or is it hard to do a fast sustained transfer speed of lots of different files?
